A verse to start your day. Jan 23,2010

Proverbs 23:23&24
Buy the truth, and sell it not;
also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.
The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice:
and he that begetteth a wise child shall have joy of him.

January 22, 2010

We came to Guatemala city yesterday
and spent the night here.
We will be going back to Patzun sometime today or tomorrow I am not sure when. But when we do I will not have any Internet. We are trying to get it working but have had very little time to work on it. I will post again when I can.
I start teaching on Monday.
I teach on Monday and Tuesday each week.
Thank you for your prayers.

Today I helped uncle Ken work on the school computers.
We transferred the files form two computers to a third computer so that we can reformat the two computers.
The school has computer classes so we need to get the computers working.

January 19, 2010

Classes started today. I do not start teaching until next Monday. I will be teaching on Mondays and Tuesdays. The children start coming at 7:00am and school starts at 7:30am. The children have class until 10:00 and then they have a 30 minute snack time and recess. At 10:30 class begins again and goes until 12:30. At 12:40 there are no more children or teachers left anywhere in sight.

January 18, 2010

Today was the Opening of the school.
We had a ceremony and the parents and children saw the class rooms and meet the teachers.
During the ceremony the director introduced all of the teachers and told who or what the would be teaching.
During the ceremony we had an earthquake. The school director said that it was God making sure that everyone was awake. The earthquake was a 6.o magnitude and the epicenter was about 70 miles form us.
That was a first for me.
It was kind of strange to feel the floor and see the building moving. At first we thought that the kids behind us were playing with our chairs but they weren't.

Today we moved to Patzun.

A Big THANK YOU to
Howard Race for fixing the sink in my room.

Cultural Experiences

I have had several cultural experiences since I have been in Guatemala.
Here are some pictures.

This is one form of Taxi and yes it only has three wheels.
We saw 5 or 6 people get out of one of these the other day.

My first Pila experience.
I was washing sheets.

We passed and then were passed by a parade on the way to Guatemala city from Patzun today.

It is not often that you see girls riding sideways on a motorcycle in the states but you see it almost everyday here.

This was part of the small market.
Tomorrow is the big market. I will try to get pictures tomorrow.

Restaurants In Guatemala.

Here are some pictures of some restaurants that you might recognize. I took these pictures on the way back to Guatemala city from Patzun. None of these pictures where taken in Patzun.
Burger King & Quiznos Sub

Pizza Hut & McDonald's & Domino's

I have not eaten at any of these restaurants.

January 15, 2010

Today I did two things that my mother would not approve of in the states.
First: I had two carbonated drinks.
(Which I have not done in almost a year)
Then the Radio board In Patzun prepared a meal for us.
Second: I ate steak with my fingers.
It was wonderful.
(By the way I did not have a choice in either situation.)

January 14, 2010

Today has been a fun day.
Mrs. Spaugh and I went to the craft group meeting.
We took our cross-stitch and worked on it while listening to the other ladies talk.
When we got home I talked to both my dad and my sister and her husband on Skype.
Thank the Lord for Skype.
I can call home everyday and talk as long as I want and it does not cost a thing.

A verse to start your day. Jan 14,2010

Philippians 4:8

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

Pray for Haiti.
They have had a very bad earthquake.

A verse to start your day. Jan 13,2010

Psalm 103:11,17-18

For as the heaven is high above the earth,
so great is his mercy toward them that fear him.
But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting
upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children's children;
To such as keep his covenant, and to those that remember
his commandments to do them.

January 12, 2010

Today has been and very slow day.

We did go to a meeting at San Martin a restaurant in the mall. We had already had lunch so I had a piece of carrot cake and some water. The cost may surprise you. I paid 24.q for the two things and the tip.

That is about $2.87 in the states.

A verse for the day. Jan 12, 2010

Psalm 102:25-27

In the beginning you laid the foundations of the earth,
and the heavens are the work of your hands.

They will perish, but you remain;
they will all wear out like a garment.
Like clothing you will change them
and they will be discarded.

But you remain the same,
and your years will never end.

"Teaching"

A verse for the day. Jan 11, 2010

Psalm 71:5
Let my mouth be filled with thy praise
and with thy honour all the day.

January 10, 2010

Today we went to Antigua to the Hospital to see some friends. Their little girl has pneumonia. She is doing much better and may come home this week. Please keep them in your prayers.

We went to market. That was an experience that I will never forget!
The streets were filled to overflowing. We could not drive the car down roads that only days before we had driven down. There were people everywhere.
I did not get pictures but I will and will post them as soon as I can.

We also attended church in Patzun.
We had a guest preacher.
He preached on 1 Timothy 6:3-10.
He had three main points.
First: We did not bring anything into this world and we will not take anything out.
Second: Be content with how God made you and what He gave you.
Third: Have the right Attitude about money.

A verse for the day. Jan 10, 2010

Psalm 40:5
Many, O LORD my God,
Are thy wonderful works which thou hast done,
and thy thoughts which are to us-ward:
they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee:
if I would declare and speak of them,
they are more than can be numbered.

This is the video that I tried to show at Church. However I was unable to get my Mac computer to talk to the church's PC therefore it was not shown. If you wish to watch it, click on the link.

January 6, 2010

On Wednesday we went to Price Smart and did some shopping. Price Smart is like Costco. When we got back to the house I realized that I was very tired. So I took an hour-long nap. I wish that I could do that more often.

God is good and he will take care of His children.

January 5, 2010

On Tuesday, we went to Antigua. There we spent the day at the home of some friends. Mr. Spaugh and Mr. Philippi worked and Mrs. Spaugh, Mrs. Philippi and I did some cross-stitching and played some games. We also enjoyed looking at all of the beautiful flowers.
The poinsettias grow to be 6 of 7 feet tall.

January 4, 2010

On Monday, we went to Patzun. We visited the radio station’s new tower and we saw some of the people from the radio station. We also went to Alfa y Omega and I was able to see the church and school and where I will be living. At this point the government has not said when school will be starting so I do not know when I will begin teaching. But I have met several of the children.

January 3, 2010

On Sunday, we had church. I am sure that you could guess the sermon and the songs were in Spanish. With the power point and the help of an interpreter I managed to understand the sermon. The man who preached, preached from John 15. He preached about unity in the body of Christ and abiding in Christ.

January 2, 2010

On Saturday, Mr. Spaugh and some friends and I climbed a volcano. Climbing Pacaya was not the easiest thing I have ever done. The altitude was so different than what I was accustomed to that I could hardly breath. The wind was so strong that we could hardly stay on our feet. But we did see some lava up close. Actually we were about three or four feet from the lava stream. We roasted hot dogs over the heat from the rocks. The rocks were so hot in one place that the bottom of my shoes started to melt. On the way home we stopped and I ate at my first Guatemalan restaurant. The food was great.

December 31, 2009

I left Huntsville, AL at 12:20 pm and arrived in Dallas, TX at 2:30 pm on December 31, 2009. When I got off the plane in Dallas Ken and Cindy Spaugh met me. From there we would fly together to Guatemala. Our flight was about an hour late leaving. We left Dallas at 6:30 pm. We were privileged to be able to fly in first class. We were served supper on the plane, a wonderful salad and ravioli.

We arrived in Guatemala City at 11:00 pm. We were met at the airport by another missionary who took us to the Spaugh’s house. He told us that Mr. and Mrs. Conner were having a New Year’s Eve party and we were invited. So we unloaded our suitcases and got in the car and went to the party. At the party I met several of the other missionaries that live here in Guatemala City. Jim and Jenny Adams and there two sons were among the missionaries that were there.
